Google AI Overviews 2024: What It Means for Your SEO Traffic

Google's AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience, or SGE) launched globally in May 2024, placing AI-generated summaries above organic results for an estimated 20% of all queries at launch, climbing to 40%+ by year-end. For many informational queries, traditional blue-link results moved entirely below the fold.

The Traffic Impact by Query Type

Informational queries — "how-to," "what is," "why does," "explain" — saw the steepest click-through rate declines, ranging from 35% to 64% depending on query specificity. The more complete the AI Overview answer, the sharper the CTR drop. Commercial and transactional queries were far less affected as AI Overviews rarely appeared for purchase-intent searches. Local service queries (plumbers near me, restaurants open now) were almost entirely unaffected.

The Citation Opportunity Inside AI Overviews

Being cited inside an AI Overview generates significant brand impressions even without direct clicks. Independent research showed that pages cited in AI Overviews experienced 20–35% increases in branded search volume — users who saw the citation later searched directly for the site. Structured data markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Article schema) dramatically increased citation probability. Pages with clear, concise, well-sourced factual answers to specific questions were cited most often. Conversational, list-based, and numbered-step content formats performed best for citation.

Adapting Your SEO Strategy for an AI-First SERP

Diversify traffic sources aggressively — AI Overviews are a structural shift, not a temporary change. Build email lists and social communities as zero-click search rises. Focus content investment on commercial and transactional intent queries where AI Overviews appear rarely. Optimise for AI citation by structuring content with direct, fact-dense answers immediately following H2/H3 headings. Add FAQ sections at the end of articles covering common follow-up questions — these are heavily mined by Google's AI for citation material.
